My names Jay I’m and avid outdoorsman here in the elko area, this agenda has always been a touch and go situation when it comes to this area, the ranchers of the area are looking for a reduction in herd sizes while advocating for a reduction in tags. Reduction in public land hunting tags allows for more landowner and private tags as well for the ranches. A quick little story, I was invited on a bull hunt in 2023, in the unit 76-081, prime elk hunting grounds, also prime WINECUP area as well. This bull hunt has always been a sacred hunt to me because I know the land like it’s home. The hunter and hunting party I joined had never seen more than 20-30 elk in one day hunting in all the years they had been out looking to harvest. In 5 days, we saw upwards of 100 bulls and around or near to 700 cows, and this isn’t even the herd I have photographed on the Copper mountain in late November of 2023 consisting of 1178 elk with 97 bulls. OnX hunt proved to the ranch hands that we were on our public lands hunting and they then apologized for the altercation, there for us not harvesting that elk. In the end, I’d like to say in the elko county area, there should be a slight increase in tags, for hunters, for the ranchers to manage their crop, and for the conservation is inside of all of us, with the line of sight of 100 miles I have documented over 3000 elk from the tips of copper Mountain and 071, to China Jim in 081 and then everything in between.
